- His family members said on the fateful day, he threatened committing suicide and took a small piece of wire at the home wanting to hang himself in the house
A prison officer based at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison committed suicide in a suspected stress-induced incident, just two weeks after a sentinel guarding the State House in Harare emptied a magazine into the air due to stress form economic challenges.
According to a tabloid H-Metro, the male prison officer was found hanging from a tree in a bush near Chikurubi prison, with family members saying he had indicated that he was stressed with life’s daily challenges and wanted to take his own life.
“His family members said on the fateful day, he threatened committing suicide and took a small piece of wire at the home wanting to hang himself in the house.
“The family members said when he left the house, they could not restrain him as he had become uncontrollable,” the publication reports.
A fortinight ago, there was a dramatic shooting incident at the State House, when a sentinel emptied a whole magazine into the air in frustration over economic challenges.
The incident has since cost the job of senior officers who have since been transferred and seriously reprimanded for sleeping on the job in an incident seen as critical to the President’s safety and security.
Lieutenant-Colonel Samson Murombo, who all along has been the commanding officer at the State House, has been moved back to the “pool” at the Zimbabwe National Army headquarters. Murombo has been replaced at the State House by one Major Regis Mangezi.
