Sadio Mane named CAF African Footballer of the Year 2019

SENEGAL and Liverpool FC forward Sadio Mane has been named the African Footballer of the Year 2019 at the CAF Awards held in Egypt Tuesday evening.

It caps a fine year for the Senegalese, whose English Premiership club Liverpool is set to lift the league title for the first time in over 20 years.

Meanwhile, it will be a fulfilling year for TP Mazembe’s President Moise Katumbi, who has been named the African Club President of the Year Award.

The Egyptian Football Association, who hosted the Afcon tournament in June last year, have been named the Federation of the Year.

Algeria have been named the African Men’s Team of the Year, with Cameroon named the African Women’s Team of the Year.

Closer to home, Desiree Ellis, coach of South African national women’s team Banyana Banyana, has won the women’s Coach of the Year category.

Ellis guided Banyana to their first ever World Cup tournament in July 2019.

A proflic goal scorer during her playing days, Ellis has coached the national side since 2016 on an interim basis, but was only appointed as the permanent coach in 2018.

Under Ellis, Banyana Banyana were the runners-up at the African Cup of Nations in 2018, losing to Nigeria in the final.
