Four machete gang members remanded in custody

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arrested four machete-wielding gang members in Norton after they ambushed a man and robbed him of ZWL$300.00 and 40 kilogrammes gold ore.

The four have since appeared this Wednesday before Norton Magistrate Babra Chimboza for initial remand and were remandend in custody to January 23

The State represented by Rufaro Chonzi told the court that Stephen Mazambani(24) Privilege Damson (29), Casper Karuru (32) and Godwell Mukune (31) for Armed Robbery after they ambushed the complainant and stole ZWL300, 00 and 40kgs of gold ore. The quartet was armed with two machetes, an axe and two wooden logs.

Chonzi added that the quartert went on to process the gold ore and sold the proceeds.

A follow up was made by the complainant and his colleagues and one person was struck with an axe by the accused persons in the process.

Police were called in and managed to arrest all the four accused persons. The weapons which included wo logs and an axe were recovered.

Chief Justice Luke Malaba on Monday announced the setting up of special courts to deal with the marauding machete-wielding gangs wreaking havoc in most parts of the country, warning that the courts would not have mercy on those who terrorise communities.

According to statistics, machete gangs have in the past few months killed over 100 people in gold wars countrywide.
